Premier announces that an Architectural Design competition be conducted

Following a community meeting on the 23rd of January where Premier Jay Weatherill asked for ideas on how best to revitalise the Port (and pledged a greater community involvement in the future of the Port) last night the Premier provided feedback to some of the questions raised by the community. One of the questions, asked by Emma Webb from the Hart's Mill Project, was about the future uses for Hart's Mill, and in particular about the community's wish that the Mill Precinct be transformed into something that we can all be proud of.

"Thank you to everyone who made the time to come out on a hot night to the public meeting on the 23rd of January.
At the meeting I promised to answer the questions that we ran out of time to address. Those answers are below.

I have looked at the many ideas that people wrote on the night and which are now posted on this website. I am grateful for the many ideas and these will be passed on to the steering committee we are forming to work with the community on the master plan.

People showed a strong interest in Hart’s Mill as a central focus of the Port's heritage and its use as a centre for the arts. They also want all residents of Port Adelaide and surrounds to be able to access the Mill.

Given this community interest, I have asked that we conduct an architectural design competition for how we can transform Hart’s Mill in a way which meets the needs of the local community. Feedback from the community during the master planning will provide the values to guide that competition."

Premier Jay Weatherill, 3 February 2012

Our sincere thanks Mr Premier from all at The Hart's Mill Project

On behalf of the Port of Adelaide Branch of the National Trust I would like to send congratulations and thanks to the Weatherill Government for its commitment to a design process for our beloved Harts Mill complex.
The restoration of this historically and culturally significant place would provide a tourism highlight and an important link to Lartelare Park. It would also provide a space that the Port Adelaide and wider communities could enjoy and be proud of.

This is a great announcement! Many thanks for sharing this original piece of writing! What's the community's wish that the Mill Precinct be transformed into something that we can all be proud of?
